Understanding Local Results

Last updated: October 13, 2026

Local Results shows how often AI assistants answer your search terms with map or place results (a list or map of local businesses), and whether your own listing appears in them. It uses the answers your search terms already collect, so there is nothing extra to set up.

Where the Data Comes From

Map results only appear for search terms with local intent, such as "best dentist in Vienna" or "hotels near the main station". If none of your search terms returned map results in the selected period, the page shows No local results.

Only some AI engines return map results. On this page, engines that cannot are greyed out in the Engines filter.

Where to Find It

Go to Local Results under Insights in your brand's sidebar. The page follows the filter bar at the top, so the date picker, Engines, topics and tags change everything on it.

Each search term also has its own Local Results section on its search term page. See 📄 Understanding your Search Term Results.

Your Key Numbers

Number

What it tells you

Where to look next

Share

Your share of all places shown in AI map results. Higher positions count more.

Geography

Avg. Position

Your average position when you were shown. Lower is better.

Engine breakdown

Detection %

How often you appear in map results at all, whatever the position.

Prompt coverage

Each number covers the full selected period and is compared with the previous period when there is enough data. If map results were shown but you were in none of them, Avg. Position reads Not found.

Start Here: Find the Prompts that Leave You Out

Open Prompt coverage. It lists the prompts where AI engines show map results without you, worst gaps first. Click a row to open that search term.

Then check Listing gaps to see what your listing is missing compared with the competitors shown in the same results.

The Sections in Detail

Key insights

The most important gaps and changes in the selected period, for example a rival leading the map results, a competitor that ranks above you, prompts whose map results leave you out, or an engine where you are missing.

Some insights appear from the first map result. Others, such as changes since the previous period and rating or review gaps, appear only once there is more data.

Geography

A map and a list of the top places by Share, plus the main rival from each engine.

The pins show where each business is located. They do not show where the AI engine searched from, so the map tells you who shows up, not in which area you rank.

Some engines list places without a location. Those places count toward every number on the page but never appear as a pin. In Engine breakdown, these engines are marked No map pins.

Click a place in the list (not a pin) to open its Competitive signals.

Competitive signals

A panel for one place. It compares its position, Share, rating and reviews with the other places that often appear alongside it.

For a competitor, Head-to-head shows how often it ranks above you in map results that show you both.

Engine breakdown

One row per AI engine, plus Overall, which matches your key numbers.

  • Map results: how often this engine shows map results for your prompts at all

  • Detection %, Share and Avg Pos: your numbers on this engine. Reach under Detection % shows how often someone using this engine sees you in map results

  • Main rival: the place that most often ranks above you on this engine

  • Rating and Reviews: yours compared with the other places in the same results, shown when there is enough data

Engines that showed no map results in the period stay blank.

Prompt coverage

One row per prompt and one column per engine. Each cell shows your Detection % and position, or Not listed when the map results never included you.

Turn on Show leaders to see which place most often ranks first in each cell. Click a row to open that search term.

Listing gaps

Where your listing trails competitors shown in the same map results. There are two kinds:

  • Completeness gap: a field is missing on your listing, for example phone number, hours or website

  • Competitive gap: you have the field, but a competitor's value is stronger, for example more reviews or a higher rating

Each card shows which engines the gap was seen on. Treat these as likely factors, not proven causes.

Trend chart

Your Average Position over time, next to up to five other places. Switch to Detection % or Top 3, and view all engines together or one at a time.

The Map Pin in your Search Terms List

In your Search Terms list, a small map pin next to an AI engine means that engine has returned map results for that search term at least once. Hover it to see how often.

The map pin does not mean you were in the map

It only shows that a map appeared in the answer. To see whether your listing was in it, open the search term's Local Results section or this page.

Tip: To get more map results, track search terms with local intent, for example ones that name a city or neighbourhood.
